I was recently talking with a client who is trying to improve her body composition. She is always consistent with her training and works very hard in the gym. She also does a nice job of eating well when she is at home. Her biggest problem is finding food options when she is traveling. So we started discussing good travel friendly snacks.
I have been asked this question many times over my few years as a coach so I thought today I would share some ideas with you. This list is by no means exhaustive, but hopefully it will give you some ideas.
I am not a huge fan of conventional jerky because it is usually filled with sugar and highly processed meats. Therefore, I choose to buy grass-fed jerky, which contains only a few spices and meat. You can even buy it with spinach mixed in if you like (you can’t taste it).
This is a great option to take with you if you are traveling. I buy my jerky from Steve’s PaleoGoods because I really enjoy their products and a small percentage (15%) of their proceeds go to support Steve’s Club National Program, which is a club for at-risk youth.
Feel free to browse their snack ideas. I have not tried their other products, but I have heard nothing but good things. Let us know if you find something you would recommend.
2. Hardboiled eggs
These are good for shorter road trips. Eggs are very nutritious and filling. And, do not be afraid of the yolk! It is good for you! 🙂
3. Avocados
I love avocados! I eat one almost every single day! They are very easy to transport and can be eaten alone (add a little salt or other spices) or added to the other snack options listed. For example, you could have a slice or two with your jerky or hardboiled eggs.
4. Veggies (carrots, celery, broccoli, green beans, etc.) and your favorite nut butter
5. Fruit and mixed nuts (preferably with no oil added)
6. Bars
You can buy these or make them at home. There are many options online for recipes and brands. Just look for ones with minimal ingredients and no added sugar.
My wife, Emme, is a big fan of Quest Protein Bars. I also know Mike Robertson really enjoys Larabars. I am sure there are other good brands, but those two will give you a start.
7. Yogurt
This will only be an option for shorter trips. Pack a small lunchbox with some ice packs, and you will be good to go. I recommend looking for plain yogurt (flavored varieties have a lot of added sugar).
My favorite yogurt is from Traders Point Creamery, which is located in Zionsville, Indiana. It is available at Marsh and some other retail stores. All of their yogurts are from grass-fed cows, and it tastes great.
I hope this gives you some good ideas for snacks. Eating well while traveling does not have to be hard. Just make sure to have a few of the options listed above on hand and you will be good to go.
Let us know in the comments if you have other good ideas.
Have a great week!
