What Position Should I Sleep In?

written by Lance Goyke

People always ask me what is the best position to sleep in.

First and foremost, if you’re not sleeping much (like our mountain-climbing Sahara Desert Marathon member here at IFAST), I want you to sleep in whatever position allows you to sleep. Shoot for 7-9 hours a night.

Got that figured out? Good. Now we can start talking about sleeping position.

If you sleep on your stomach, stop. That position doesn’t allow you to relax and the quality of your sleep goes down.

If you sleep on your back, prop your knees up with pillows. This will relieve some pressure in your low back.

Then, for you side sleepers, I want you to sleep differently depending on which side you lay on.

Sleeping on your left side? Pillow between knees, please.

Sleeping on your left side? Pillow between knees, please.

Sleeping on your right side? Pillow between feet, please.

Sleeping on your right side? Pillow between feet, please.

Use these little tricks to start tomorrow off better. This is also a good way to help you stay neutral, which we’ve talked about previously.

Happy sleeping!
