Attitude and Commitment the IFAST way

One of the things we pride ourselves on at Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training is the level of commitment our clients show and the attitude they present.

You can come into the gym on any day and at any time and literally see what I’m talking about.

It doesn’t matter what their goals are.  Our clients consistently show the intensity required to truly achieve their goals.  They’re not satisfied with a good workout.  They want the perfect workout.  The workout that will move them one step closer to their ideal weight, their best vertical jump, their best bench press or squat, or playing with less pain.

To be brief, they get it.

Yesterday, while the entire city of Indianpolis was snowed in, our 6 a.m. weight loss group was at the gym (before the snow plows by the way) like it was any other day.  They made a decision when they came to us for help that they were going to do whatever it took to achieve their goals.  Snow or no snow.

We had a new client come in yesterday to take advantage of the 14-day free membership offer.  I know he’s going to be a great client and perfect match for our attitude at IFAST.  He was snowed in to such a degree that he couldn’t make it in to work, but he was able to dig himself out in time for his assessment appointment.

Imagine the progress you could make in this atmosphere.  It’s said that you’re the average of the people that you spend the most time with, so if you want to be successful, spend time with successful people.  If you want to start a weight loss program in Indianapolis, there’s really only one place to go where you can be certain that the program and environment are ideal for your needs.

Remember, you get to try it for free because we know you won’t want to go anywhere else.  You can look like and feel like the person you really want to be.  You can perform at the best of your physical abilities.  All you have to do is start today.

Imagine how life would be if you achieved your fitness goals.

Imagine how life would be if you don’t.

What I learned at this weekend’s kettlebell seminar

This past weekend we hosted a KB seminar at I-FAST, with Master RKC instructor Brett Jones being the guest of honor.  We had about 17 attendees, and I’m pretty certain I can say that everyone learned a ton.

I’m the first to admit I don’t know all that much about KB training.  Sure, movement is movement whether you’re using a KB, DB, or barbell, but there are obviously some differences between each medium.  I wanted to bring Brett in not only so that other members could learn more about KB training, but myself as well.

As well, I’m going to be attending the RKC in Minneapolis in April, so this was an excellent chance to hone technique and see exactly what I was getting myself into.  Here are some random thoughts after spending an entire day getting acclimated to the lifts.

-  Just like it’s easy to spend an entire day working on the squat, bench or deadlift, you quickly realize how easy it is to spend time on the KB lifts as well.  I would say the first 2 hours of the workshop covered the nuances of the swing.  This wasn’t a big issue when I started off with a 12 kg KB, but when I got “upgraded” to the 24 for the rest of the afternoon my outlook changed drastically!

-  You absolutely CANNOT learn KB techniques from a video.  Can you get a general understanding and appreciation of the lifts?  Sure.  But there’s simply no comparison to being taught by a knowledable coach.  It’s the same as learning any major lift – it you are serious about getting better, you need to get with a qualified coach.

-  I’m sure I’m not the first to have this sentiment, but the Turkish Get-up is just a beast of a lift.  I was sweating profusely just using my bodyweight!

-  One thing I like about KB lifts it not only how the integrate your entire body into the lift, but how they help you find assymetries as well.  Those little asymetries may not be evident in a squat or deadlift, but in a TGU where you need hip internal/external rotation, amazing core stability, and a host of other physical qualities they become quite evident.

-  I don’t think my adductors have ever been this sore before.  Period.

-  Much like video, it’s almost impossible to learn great technique from articles.  Again, you can get the basics down and get pretty good, but sometimes the articles aren’t even right!

For example, I read a KB article a while back which described the windmill position backwards!  Instead of the back leg being straight, this article described the front leg as being straight.  After doing it this way for several years, it was quite challenging to re-learn the technique with my legs doing the opposite of what they were used to.

-  In lieu of the RKC in April, I really need to get my hands prepared for the ensuing trauma.  By the end of the day, my hands were absolutely trashed and I think another hour or so would’ve ripped the calluses from my hands.  If one day can do that, what can three do?  Time to get my game face on…

All in all, it was a great weekend and I learned a ton of stuff from Brett.  It was also great to watch him coach and see that a lot of the things Bill and I are doing get results for others as well.

Before I sign-off for the day, I’d like to give a few plugs for people who helped out:

-  Thanks to Rick Huse for allowing us to use his KB’s all day.  Rick is a super smart, and all-round good guy.

-  As well, thanks to Jason Thompson for his KB’s as well.  Jason designs some sweet KB related gear, so be sure to check him out at his website www.GiryaNation.com.

Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training: Changing Your Weight Loss Approach

I think we’ve set an IFAST (Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training) record over the last 10-14 days for new assessments.  The interesting thing was the common theme among several of our new fitness clients who are interested in improving their body composition (lose fat and firm up their bodies).

At IFAST, we intentionally attract serious fitness enthusiasts, so our new fitness clients were already working hard.  Thing is they’ve stopped seeing results.  This is not uncommon as many weight loss clients will have hit a plateau at one time or another.

The point you need to understand is that a plateau is just a sign that your body has adapted to your fat loss program, and it’s time to make a change in your eating plan and/or your fat loss exercise program.

The most common theme is that people trying to lose weight will typically rely on longer durations of “cardio” and a lot less food.  Problem is that your body may get defensive and actually retain unwanted body fat by slowing down your metabolism.  This oftentimes leads to frustration for the weight loss client and results in “falling off the wagon” and a failure to reach their fat loss goals.

The Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training weight loss programs are specifically designed to maintain exercise intensity which is a key component to fat loss training that many people are unaware of.  The result is faster fat loss and fewer plateaus along the way.  That means you’ll reach your fat loss goals quicker and with less frustration.

Don’t forget you won’t find an Indianapolis personal trainer that will give you 14 days of full membership just to prove their worth like we do at Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training.  We show you why we’re different, and why our clients are more successful?

Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training Update

It’s been a busy week this week.

We’ve started a new intern with us, Nick Rosencutter.  Nick comes to us from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, one of the top sports science programs in the country.  Nick’s also a competitive powerlifter in the 181 pound class with deadlift over 500 pounds.  He’s already getting immersed in the IFAST system and getting to know all the members.

We’ve had a bunch of new people in for their assessments this week and have already booked several for next week.  Primetime a.m and p.m. groups are almost full, so if you’re on the fence, you better call today to get scheduled.  Remember that if you want to try us out, you’ll get 14 days free full membership including your assessment, individualized fitness program, weight loss program, or sports training program, and six training sessions.  There’s not a single Indianapolis personal trainer that’s willing to offer such an opportunity.  We laugh at the offers of “join and get a free training session”.  With Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training, you’re a member from day one.

Just a reminder that Master Russian Kettlebell Instructor Brett Jones will be here on the 24th for a big one-day seminar.  Not only is Brett a smart guy and skilled with a kettlebell, but he’s strong as anyone you’ll find.  We’ve only got a couple spots left so get signed up ASAP.  There’s a discount for IFAST members.

Maia Monchek will be in this weekend.  We’re prepping Maia for her debut as a Purdue Boilermaker on the women’s softball team.  She’s brining in the whole family for assessments and programming.

Professional MMA fighter, Dan New continues to prep for his upcoming fight in just a few weeks.  With a combination of improved strength and a few Active Release Technique session, Dan’s looking to be in great shape.

A word of warning!

Spring Break is only 3 months away.  If you want to get ready for the beach, you need to get started now.  Call 578-0998 to get your assessment set up and start the best fitness program Indianapolis has to offer.

Morning Fat Loss Program at Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training Update

We’ve added two new members to the morning fat loss program at Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training.  So a hearty welcome to both Lindsay and Sue.

Both gals are already demonstrating the now famous IFAST attitude that assures them success.

Sue came in today with her compliance manual all filled out complete with all her long and short-term goals.  She’s already making changes to her food selections and refining her eating program.

Lindsay was quite impressive in her second workout this week.  She comes from an athletic background and it shows as she was picking up exercise cues like she’d been training for years.  She finished her workout today with kettlebell swings and knocked them out like a pro.

Chris is still kicking butt as usual and will be kicking his program into high gear.  Keep riding the momentum Chris!

JK continues to lead by example.  I can’t tell you how proud I am to work with her.  We were able to progress her program today and train exercises that were once too painful to perform.

Here’s a little IFAST weight loss program tip for you.

It’s common for folks get frustrated with their lack fat loss of progress especially early on in their weight loss program.    The changes may be gradual and therefore not visible since you tend to see yourself every day.

One of the measures we use to keep people on track and motivated is by taking their skinfold measurements on our clients’ cheeks and under their chins.  While these measures don’t factor into their body fat percentage calculation, these areas tend to be the first place where they lose a measureable amount of body fat.  So we can take a quick and accurate measure of their progress any time to show that while they may not see it, they are changing for the better.

Until next week!
