KIRSTEN IFAST

Plato said that, “Music and rhythm find their way into the secret places of the soul.” Our January MVP has used his musical talents to improve the soul of Indianapolis. It’s been an inspiring pleasure to see Greg apply the same passion and consistency to his health and fitness. Greg meets regularly with Jessica, our staff dietician; he also gets coaching three times a week and often attends team training. Not only does he have one of the most warm and genuine smiles ever put on a human face, Greg’s positive attitude, snarky humor, and investment in himself are a treasured part of our IFAST family.  Take a bow, Greg. You rock.

IFAST MVP: FAST 5 WITH GREG S.

How long have you been a member and how did you hear about IFAST?

I joined IFAST on August 18, 2014. I learned about the gym through online research. I wanted to find a place that was small and where the trainers were really knowledgeable about what they were doing. I also wanted to go to a place that had a nutritionist. I come from a family of sports guys and it was important that the place I chose had people that understand the human body and how it works. That’s why I chose IFAST.

What advice do you have for newbies?

My advice is to allow yourself to not be intimidated. I would encourage newbies to ask lots of questions and really concentrate on form over quantity of weight they are exercising with, and to approach it in an intellectual way. It takes a lot of concentration to do it well. Be present in the moment and how it feels to do that. IFAST is good at helping you become self aware of how your body moves and encourages you to have more ownership of that.

What is your favorite part of IFAST?

My favorite part is the holistic approach to fitness. I’ve seen results in ways I didn’t expect, like the way I walk has changed in a good way. It’s not about immediate, visible results necessarily, but internal results. I like how well educated everyone is that works there, but yet there is a lack of pretension. I also really like the diversity of the clientele at IFAST. I like that someone next to me may be a 70-year-old lady who is there for longevity reasons and then next to her is a young man who is on a minor league team for the Yankees. The IFAST staff is able to tailor their knowledge base to serve this diverse population.

How do you stay motivated?

Staying motivated is the hardest part. I’ve learned to take my progress one day at a time. Each day I go in and workout, I try to do just a little better than the day before – a little better form, more concentration, up the weight just a little more. I try to be satisfied with slow and steady improvements. It’s now a part of my routine – Monday through Friday.

What is one thing about yourself that most people don’t know?

I work in the arts, but I’m an avid sports fan as my hobby. My dad is a basketball coach and my grandpa was a wrestling coach. Even though I work in the arts, I find a lot of enjoyment supporting and watching sports. My favorite is tennis and next is basketball.
