What is a bootcamp?

written by Mike Robertson

As many of you know, we’re getting ready to start bootcamps here at IFAST. And that’s led to the following question being asked a lot

“What the heck is a bootcamp?”

I’m glad you asked 🙂

Here at IFAST, we offer what’s called semi-private or small group training. Essentially, you train in a group of 2-4 clients at a time. This leverages our time as trainers (not as much “down” time), while saving you, the consumer, money.

So if small group training is 2-4 clients per session, a bootcamp is much larger – typically somewhere between 15-20 people, although many of my friends in the fitness industry run camps with upwards of 50-100 people!

The next question I’ve gotten asked a lot is, “what do you do in a bootcamp workout?”

Now that’s an even better question. If you watch popular TV shows (and I’m not naming names here), or go to a typical bootcamp workout, you’ll see idiot trainers acting like drill sergaents, trying to punish their clients into submission. What’s worse is the exercise selection is typically horrible as well – lots of running, jumping, and ridiculous exercises that most people simply aren’t prepared to do safely and effectively.

Needless to say, our bootcamps will still follow the same core philosophy of IFAST, just in a little bit different format than a typical semi-private session.

Bootcamp workouts will still start with soft-tissue work such as foam rolling. Next, you’ll move into a dynamic or movement based warm-up to get you prepared for your training session. And finally, you’ll be put into small groups (3-5 people per group) and go through stations of different exercises.

For instance a series of stations could like this:

  • One group is working with kettlebells, doing swings or goblet squats.
  • Another group is working on the TRX, performing inverted rows.
  • Another group is using the battling ropes.
  • Etc.

You get the point – quite simply this is a class that’s geared towards metabolic training, as well as time efficiency. Each class will last no longer than 60 minutes, so you’re guaranteed to get in, have an awesome, upbeat training session, and then get on your way.

Our bootcamps kick off next Saturday, September 10th. We’ll be running a camp on the 17th and 24th as well, and then in October we’re going to really kick-start the bootcamps with an awesome transformation contest. Stay tuned for more details on all this in coming weeks!

All the best
