Laura McNally, an IFAST distance client from LaGrange, Illinois, has been part of the IFAST family for over three years. She is positive, driven, and a fabulous part of our IFAST Wonder Women tribe. Last fall, her life map threw her on a detour:
Last October, after a routine mammogram, I heard the surprising news that I had breast cancer. With the help of surgery, chemotherapy, and the love and support of friends and family, I’m lucky to be here on the other side of treatment, feeling strong and optimistic. During one of my visits to Northwestern, I saw a flyer for Recovery on Water, a rowing team for women in the breast cancer club.
In February, I wandered into my first Recovery on Water orientation, and just like that I was hooked. These tough ladies have helped me internalize that breast cancer does not have to define my physical potential. They’ve also given me the peace of mind that comes from knowing that regular exercise has been shown to reduce breast cancer reoccurrence by up to 50%. And most importantly, they’ve welcomed me into a community of strong, vibrant athletes with the biggest hearts around…ROW provides training 6 days a week, year round. We row in shells on the south branch of the Chicago River spring through fall, and we row on ergs when the weather keeps us indoors. We pay dues based on ability to pay, and no one is ever turned away — great news for people facing the medical bills this disease can spawn.”
IFAST is proud to sponsor her efforts. “She’s a cool human being,” adds IFAST owner, Bill Hartman. “I mean, what do you say about someone who stared cancer in the face and said f*** you?”
We say we love her, and we wish her much success. Interested in helping Laura reach her goal to raise $3000? Please visit her fundraising page today.
