Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training Update

It’s been a busy week this week.

We’ve started a new intern with us, Nick Rosencutter.  Nick comes to us from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, one of the top sports science programs in the country.  Nick’s also a competitive powerlifter in the 181 pound class with deadlift over 500 pounds.  He’s already getting immersed in the IFAST system and getting to know all the members.

We’ve had a bunch of new people in for their assessments this week and have already booked several for next week.  Primetime a.m and p.m. groups are almost full, so if you’re on the fence, you better call today to get scheduled.  Remember that if you want to try us out, you’ll get 14 days free full membership including your assessment, individualized fitness program, weight loss program, or sports training program, and six training sessions.  There’s not a single Indianapolis personal trainer that’s willing to offer such an opportunity.  We laugh at the offers of “join and get a free training session”.  With Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training, you’re a member from day one.

Just a reminder that Master Russian Kettlebell Instructor Brett Jones will be here on the 24th for a big one-day seminar.  Not only is Brett a smart guy and skilled with a kettlebell, but he’s strong as anyone you’ll find.  We’ve only got a couple spots left so get signed up ASAP.  There’s a discount for IFAST members.

Maia Monchek will be in this weekend.  We’re prepping Maia for her debut as a Purdue Boilermaker on the women’s softball team.  She’s brining in the whole family for assessments and programming.

Professional MMA fighter, Dan New continues to prep for his upcoming fight in just a few weeks.  With a combination of improved strength and a few Active Release Technique session, Dan’s looking to be in great shape.

A word of warning!

Spring Break is only 3 months away.  If you want to get ready for the beach, you need to get started now.  Call 578-0998 to get your assessment set up and start the best fitness program Indianapolis has to offer.

Morning Fat Loss Program at Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training Update

We’ve added two new members to the morning fat loss program at Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training.  So a hearty welcome to both Lindsay and Sue.

Both gals are already demonstrating the now famous IFAST attitude that assures them success.

Sue came in today with her compliance manual all filled out complete with all her long and short-term goals.  She’s already making changes to her food selections and refining her eating program.

Lindsay was quite impressive in her second workout this week.  She comes from an athletic background and it shows as she was picking up exercise cues like she’d been training for years.  She finished her workout today with kettlebell swings and knocked them out like a pro.

Chris is still kicking butt as usual and will be kicking his program into high gear.  Keep riding the momentum Chris!

JK continues to lead by example.  I can’t tell you how proud I am to work with her.  We were able to progress her program today and train exercises that were once too painful to perform.

Here’s a little IFAST weight loss program tip for you.

It’s common for folks get frustrated with their lack fat loss of progress especially early on in their weight loss program.    The changes may be gradual and therefore not visible since you tend to see yourself every day.

One of the measures we use to keep people on track and motivated is by taking their skinfold measurements on our clients’ cheeks and under their chins.  While these measures don’t factor into their body fat percentage calculation, these areas tend to be the first place where they lose a measureable amount of body fat.  So we can take a quick and accurate measure of their progress any time to show that while they may not see it, they are changing for the better.

Until next week!

Happy New Year from Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training

We just want to thank all of our members for a great first 5 months.

We thank you for your attention and your amazing efforts.

The progress that you’ve all made in the last few months has been inspiring.  It’s like having a new success story every day we come in.

We just found out today that the 6 a.m. weight loss group will have a new member joining them next week.  There’s no doubt that she’ll benefit from their weight loss experience and their support.

It’s been interesting how our reach has extended beyond the Indianapolis personal training realm.  We’ve had as many as 4 clients from California, 2 from North Dakota, one from New York, one from Florida, and even one from Japan!

When we designed Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training (IFAST), we envisioned what would be the most effective fitness training facility in Indianapolis for the serious fitness enthusiasts, weight loss clients, and competitive athletes.  We wanted to be able to implement the best weight loss programs and the best sports training programs available.  Based on the results we’re seeing with our clients, it’s obvious that we’re achieving that goal.

No where else will you be able to see such a variety of people exercising in the same gym with such great success.

In just the last 2 weeks, in addition to our weight loss programs, we’ve implemented training for martial artists and mixed martial artists, Olympic bob sled, soccer programs, tennis programs, golf programs, hockey programs, baseball programs, college football programs, and powerlifting programs.

You’ve made the atmophere here at IFAST the most supportive and goal-oriented in Indianapolis.

It’s a pleasure and an honor to share in your successes and we look forward to an even greater 2009.

MMA Training

As many of you know, I’ve been training an MMA fighter for the past year or so now.  Dan is a great guy, and I couldn’t ask for a better athlete to work with.

When designing routines for MMA fighters, however, you run into a lot of problems.  Most obviously, what do you focus on?  Sport-specific training for many sports is easy – for instance in powerlifting, you just get strong.  Track?  Run fast in a straight line.  Now I say that with some sarcasm, but compare one of these sports where the training focus is quite narrow, to something like MMA.

In Dan’s case, I need to balance the following:

- Strength/power work
- Flexibility/mobility
- Endurance/stamina
- Skill/technical work in three different areas (I don’t train this per se, but I have to know what he’s doing outside of my time to make sure his training with me is optimal)

But beyond all these separate categories, think about the overlap between them as well?!?!!  For example strength/power is great, but if you only have it in the first round, chances are you won’t fight too well!  In contrast, you need to have great strength/power initially, but you also need to have strenth/power endurance into the 2nd, 3rd, or even 5th rounds!

Keep in mind, too, that training for strength/power while simultaneously training for endurace/stamina is akin to a dog chasing it’s tail.  Instead, we’ll focus specific times of the training season on bringing up strength/power, and then trying to maintain as much of that as possible when bringing up conditioning and peaking for a fight.

In all honesty, it can be a pain in the ass to write/develop these programs.  But at the same time, I know that working outside of my comfort zone is taking my coaching ability to the next level.

If you want to get the most out of your training, get yourself with a qualified coach who understands you, your sport, and how to take you to the next level of performance.  Good luck!

All the best

Mike

Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training Updates 12-5

Today is going to be a random post as I have a bunch of stuff to update everyone on!

First and foremost, it appears as though we’re going to be featured on Fox 59 news in the very near future!  Obviously this is very cool, and we hope it will bring us some much needed recognition.  Mailers, blogs, and websites are all fine and dandy, but nothing is more powerful than getting some TV time!

Our clients are continuing to excel as well.  I had a conversation with JS, one of our open gym members, a few days ago.  A competitive powerlifter back in the day, he came to us with a goal of leaning out and becoming more athletic.  My goal was to give him a very balanced workout – prehab/rehab stuff to clean up his posture and movement, some strength/power work to keep him strong, and energy system work to keep him looking buff for the ladies.

The result?  First off (if I do say so myself), the guy looks jacked!  So that’s a definite plus.  On top of that, he said he’s possibly more athletic than he’s ever been.  All in all the guy is doing great and I can’t wait to see what the coming months do for him.

Finally, we officially received Prowler #2 on Wednesday, so we’re ready to get people out back and start kicking ass again!  I don’t know anyone who really likes the Prowler, but I’m pretty sure everyone likes the after effects!

Have a great weekend and see you on Monday!

All the best

Mike
