Why is IFAST different?

One of the most common questions we get at IFAST is, “what makes you guys different?”

It’s a fantastic question – and one that I actually love answering.  Here are just a few of the reasons I feel we’re superior to your local, big-box gym.

1 – A well-trained staff

Obviously, many people who come to IFAST know about Bill and myself.  I think that our backgrounds and training experience definitely set us apart from other trainers in the area.  That’s not meant to be disparaging to anyone, but I do think we’re pretty good. :)

Beyond Bill and myself, we have two fantastic full-time trainers in Wayne and Zach as well.  Zach and Wayne haven’t been in the industry as long as Bill or myself, but they’ve both spent over 4 months in the facility going through an unpaid internship to learn about our coaching and training methodologies.  They’re fantastic trainers and really help set our facility apart. Wayne has worked for us for close to a year, and Zach just joined us at the beginning of August.

We brought these two guys on not only because they’re great coaches, but great people as well.

2 – More than just a membership

When you sign on at most gyms, once your memberhsip dues are collected you’re on your own to figure out what to do.

Not here.

Everyone who comes into our gym not only has an individualized program, but they get dedicated training sessions as well. Working with a coach is a sure-fire way to fast track your progress, and help you achieve your goals faster.

So with every gym membership you purchase from us, you get the following:

- 1, 2 or 3 weekly coaching sessions

- Monthly program updates

- Unlimited gym usage

Finally, one of the best things about our gym is the fact that you’re surrounded by like-minded inviduals.  Everyone at IFAST comes here for a different reason; whether it’s to lose body fat or scale weight, build muscle, improve their athletic performance, or to simply get stronger, eveyone here has a goal and is dedicated to achieving it.

Can you say that about most gyms?

3 – Individualized programming

The final key to puzzle is individualized programming to help you achieve your goals.

Every client that comes into IFAST gets a total-body assessment to determine muscle imbalances, joint mobility and flexibility, body composition, and to get a general feel for how they move.

From this assessment, we combine their “needs” (what we find in the assessment) and merge that with their “goals” (what they want to achieve from their training).

The result? A program that not only gets them moving and feeling better, but helps them get bigger, stronger, lose body fact, etc.

These are just a few of the reasons I feel that IFAST is superior, but at the end of the day, you really have to try us out to understand.

How to Stretch Effectively

At IFAST, we’re big on a holistic style of programming.

In other words, every program is going to have some element of soft-tissue work, stretching, strength training, cardiovascular or energy system training, etc.

One of the hot topics of today is stretching.  We all know that stretching is “good,” but a key ingredient to a stretching program is using the right type of stretch at the right time.

While we use numerous forms of stretching, the basic types include the following:

-    Dynamic/movement-based stretching
-    Static stretching (think “bend-over and touch your toes”, although we almost never use that one!)
-    Eccentric quasi-isometrics – which is really a fancy term for an active stretch used at the end of the workout

Whether your goal is fat loss, muscle gain, or improved sport performance, using the right stretch at the right time can make a world of difference in how you move and feel.

Cardio for Cardio? Or Fat Loss?

One of the questions we always get at IFAST is, “what do you do for cardio?”

It’s a great question, and it really depends on what the goals of the client are.

If your goal is to lose body fat, long duration, low-intensity cardio may not be the best option.  It can be used at certain times throughout the year, but it’s probably not optimal.  Especially if your goal is to lose weight or body fat fast.

However, this leads us to another question – what are you doing “cardio” for anyway?  Are you doing it for fat/weight loss?  Or do you actually need cardiovascular training/development?

Several clients who have come into the gym lately quite simply aren’t prepared for high-intensity interval workouts.  It could be due to low work capacity, high blood pressure, a high resting heart rate, etc., but all of these factors let us know that they need some cardiac development work first and foremost, before we get into the high-intensity methods.

The bottom line here is this:  When you say cardio, you need to clearly define what your goal of said cardio is.  From there, it’s much easier to develop a plan that will help you achieve that goal.

Interested in our gym?  Not sure if it’s right for you?  We offer 14-days FREE, or 30-days for $39.  Give the gym a shot, and if it’s not for you, there’s no risk and no obligation to join.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Write It Down!

It’s that time of year again.

You know, the time when everyone gets serious about losing weight or body fat.

One of the biggest issues, however, is that people fail to recognize how important diet really is.

If you go into any gym across America, you’ll see tons of people working out for the first time in many, many months. What many fail to recognize, however, is that their weight or fat loss efforts are lost in vain because they fail to recognize the importance of diet.

Here’s a very simple tip I’d like to use today:

Write down every single food that you eat. Write down how much you ate, when you ate it, and if possible, try and estimate the calorie count.

Where a lot of people miss the mark is failing to recognize how many calories they take in on any given day.

For instance, you can’t forget to count condiments, beverages, and even little foods that you might snack on throughout the day.

For many, this is an eye-opening experience.

If you’re interested in finding out what IFAST can do for you, please give us a call at 317. 578. 0998.

This could be the best year of your life, so don’t delay!

Here’s What Men’s Health Magazine’s Adam Campbell Thinks of Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training

DSC03423

So you most likely already know that Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training was named to Men’s Health Magazine’s Top 10 Best Gyms (see the September issue on news stands now).  Well, MH’s Fitness Director and author of the upcoming Men’s Health Big Book of Exercises (which includes program contributions from both Mike Robertson and Bill Hartman) wanted to see first hand how we work and what we can do.

It seems Adam had a couple issues that he just couldn’t get resolved and needed a little help.  I’ll let Adam tell you in his own words:

If you live in driving distance of Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training, you owe it to yourself to take advantage of IFAST’s amazing offer for a free assessment. In a matter of minutes, Bill Hartman not only diagnosed the cause of my nagging hip injury, but he had me walking away pain-free after just one visit. That’s right: After one session, an ailment that was causing me significant pain for the last 2 years—when I stepped in and out of my car and did exercises such as the side lunge—completely vanished.

Was it magic? Of course not. Bill understands human anatomy better than anyone I’ve ever met—keep in mind, this is a list of experts that includes hundreds of orthopedists, sports medicine doctors, university researchers, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and professional strength coaches—and he uses this knowledge to treat the cause of your pain, not just the symptoms. But even better, Bill also knows how to design a timesaving total-body fitness program that repairs and upgrades your body from head to toe. This eliminates the muscle imbalances and weaknesses that lead to neck, shoulder, back, hip, and knee pain, and that also limit your ability to lose fat and build strength.
The truth is, we all need help in these areas. Maybe you work a 60-hour a week job in which you sit in front of a computer all day. Or you’re a stay-at-home mom who hasn’t had time for exercise. Or perhaps you’re an athlete—whether a weekend warrior, or at the high school, college, or even professional level—and you want to raise your performance to all-new heights. Regardless of who you are or what you do, the chances are very high that your body has broken down somewhere. Trouble is, you may not even know it yet. Many muscle and joint problems take their toll over a number of years, and by the time they’re noticeable enough to compel you to take action, most of the damage has already been done.

Is your body falling apart? Could it be better than it is now—stronger, leaner, faster? Why wait to find out, especially when you can get a full functional assessment for FREE? I’ve been working in the fitness industry for more than a decade, and this is by far the most valuable offer I’ve ever seen. Forget the promises you see on late-night infomercials, this is the real deal. So do yourself a favor—do your body a favor—and schedule an appointment at IFAST as soon as possible. Trust me: It’s rare to find a fitness team that packs the mind-power and experience of Bill Hartman and Mike Robertson. They’re the best in the business, and people in Indianapolis are lucky to have such an incredible resource.
