Of Dirty Dishes and IFAST Clients

The other day I was reminded of my first real job.  Growing up on a farm I always had to do things like cut the grass, bail hay, etc., but I’m talking about my first job where I had to actually drive to work, got a real paycheck, etc.

I worked at a local restaurant named Shoney’s.  I’m not sure how many of you even remember this place, but it was kind of like a Golden Corral before they became popular.  I decided to work there because Kambi (a good girlfriend of mine) was a server there, and she promised she could get me a job.

The job obviously had benefits – I actually made some money, got to work with a good friend, and at the end of every shift my bros in the back would hook me up with a serious bacon cheeseburger.

NEVER discount the power of a well-cooked bacon cheeseburger.

The downside, however, was the fact that as a dishwasher/table busser, I was kept pretty busy.  Not to mention the fact that all it takes is cleaning peoples plates for 5 or 6 hours to really put a dent in your appetite!

I clearly remember on one particular Sunday when I was scheduled to work at 6 am.  It was weird because this was the first time I’d ever worked a Sunday, and I wasn’t fully aware of what the terms “all-you-can-eat buffet” meant to me as the ONLY busser scheduled that morning.

I kid you not, this was one of the single worst days of my life.  It was like a sea of dishes – I would start to get things caught up, and then I’d get slammed when the next 10 tables got up at the same time.

People were constantly coming in and out, eating about five times more than they probably should, and dirtying up so many plates I never did get caught up until the buffet finished around 2 pm. My back and shoulders ached for at least 3 days afterwords.  It was ridiculous.

Needless to say, that was the last Sunday I ever worked!  But more importantly, I thought about why bussing tables and washing dishes bugged me so much…

It was damn near impossible to quantify any progress. It seemed as though the more tables I bussed, the more dishes I cleared, it didn’t matter.  I wasn’t getting caught up, and it was never-ending.  It was a revolving door of dishes.

Now I’m sure you’re wondering, how in the hell does this relate to IFAST clients?

Well, it means everything if you ask me.

When Bill and I opened our gym, we had a very clear concept in our minds – most importantly, we knew we weren’t going to cater to the typical bros in your local fitness facility.  We wanted people that were serious about progress – dropping pounds, adding muscle, or simply getting stronger.

The bottom line was, we wanted to see progress.  Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for moral victories from time-to-time, but numbers don’t lie.

If you’ve been checking out our blog lately, you’ll see the before and afters of our clients.  These are real people, achieving real results.

At IFAST, we have everything from the typical fat loss clients who’s trying to get in better shape, up to elite level powerlifters and Olympic-level athletes.  Everyone gets along, because everyone there is goal-oriented and focused on improving themselves.

If you’re serious about improving yourself and seeing what you can do, why not contact us today?  There’s no need to wait for the New Year – get  a 3 month jump start on everyone else and get started today!

My time at IFAST has affected me positively in more ways than I can count.

Aside from the obvious perks of weight and size loss, my quality of life has improved. After about a month and a half, I was experiencing greater range of motion and a decrease in lower back pain. By the end of 3 months I was having no lower back trouble and very little neck discomfort. These were problems I thought I would have to live with – but with postural improvements apparently not!

My workouts at IFAST have also improved my energy level. I feel more energized throughout the day, every day. One of the biggest pluses for me was psychological. I have learned that a lot of times you can do more than you think you can. You will never know what you are capable of until you try. I have taken these lessons from the gym and applied it to my every day life with great results.

At IFAST I feel supported. Any and all questions I have during my workouts are answered. We work as a team there and are turning my weaknesses into strengths.  Thanks IFAST!

Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training Success Story

If there’s one thing that sets IFAST apart from every other fitness center, weight loss program, or gym in Indianapolis, it’s the fact that all of our clients are serious about their goals.

I challenge you to find a better atmosphere than what we have at IFAST.  On any day, you’ll see athletes performing their sport-specific training programs training right along side of our weight loss program clients or a powerlifter.  While at first it doesn’t seem like this can possibly be effective, it works because all of our members have one thing in common.  They all work as hard as possible to make progress every time they step into the gym.  It doesn’t matter whether they’re male or female.  That one commonality of truly making the effort necessary to be successful makes IFAST one of the Top 10 Gyms in the country according to Men’s Health Magazine and the best training center in Indy.

If there’s one guy that personifies what I fast is all about, it’s Matt M.  Matt’s been with us since December and from day 1 there was no doubt that he fit right in.  Matt brings an intensity to his training that easily compares to the hardest working athlete.  His results speak for themselves.  Way to go Matt!

Update from a previous IFAST intern

We just received this e-mail from a previous IFAST intern, TJ Lensch.  TJ spent the summer here, and it sounds as though he’s being rewarded for all his hard work!

Hey guys how is everything going!?  I promised I would stay in contact so I guess I’ll fill you in on what’s happened in the short time since my departure.

I didn’t take any time off in terms of utilizing the things you have taught me during my internship.  I have had several people approach me about programs, and have been busy writing and fixing up times for some assessments for people.

Also, after talking with my head coach (who was very impressed with some ideas), he officially named me strength and conditioning coordinator for the Northwestern College football program and gave me full control of the program.  As well, the head athletic Trainer as well as the head of the kinesiology want to get together with me to work together in developing programs for all the sports teams.  I am making sure to take full advantage of this opportunity to keep sharpening my skills and constantly seeking new information to do what’s best for the athletes.

Thank you for all the help!  You guys have helped with giving me a solid direction early in my life to help accomplish my career goals and have had a great impact on my personal and professional life.  So thanks again and will stay in touch!

I’ve got to admit, Bill and I are proud as hell of this kid.  He worked his butt off while he was here, and I’m sure he’s well on his way to becoming a top-flight coach.  Great work TJ!

All the best
